KILNS SERVICES

Inadequate inspection and maintenance of rotary kilns leads to high maintenance and operational costs.  Whilst the operational speed of the kiln is slow the forces can be extreme leading to rapid degradation under poor operating conditions.  The life of tyres, rollers, girth gears, pinions and refractory is directly related to correct kiln care.

When the load distribution of a fully operational kiln is uniform at the support rollers, flexing and distortion of the shell is minimised, mechanical wear is reduced and component life is optimised.  This condition is achieved with correct kiln alignment, and requires optimisation of the geometry between the true rotational axis, the shell axis, the gears, the tyres and the rollers.

Kilns must float across the rollers during normal operation to minimise wear.  This is achieved by correctly controlling the axial thrust of the kiln against the sloping kiln axis.  Owing to changes in both the operating conditions and the kiln’s physical condition, regular inspections and roller adjustments are necessary to maintain correct kiln tracking.

Most kiln maintenance is completed online – indeed much needs to be completed online to adjust for normal operating conditions – so process impact is minimal, and Impact Engineering works closely with its customers before, during and after outages to ensure equipment uptime is maximised.
